What is Classical Tantra?
Classical Tantra refers to a spiritual movement which originated in the Indian subcontinent between the 3rd and 12th century. It is generally meant as a ‘system of practices’, more precisely psychophysical and awareness cultivation practices, whose end-point is embodied liberation (jīvanmukti).
In our everyday life, embodied liberation translates into total intimacy with the whole of reality. This requires us to step outside of our conceptualization of reality to see directly rather than through the lens of our stories, thoughts, labels, and past conditioning.
Classical Tantra is intended and designed for people with busy lives, who have jobs and families. It is non-transcendentalist and it embraces every part of the human experience. It recognizes the divinity in the whole of reality. This includes you!
On this path, we seek to shed misconceptions and mental constructs that do not serve us in recognizing the Truth: all that exists, through all time & space, is one all-encompassing and unbroken field of awareness.

Meet your Guide
Hello,
I’m Christopher Wallis, also known as Hareesh. I’ve dedicated my life to the study and practice of Classical Tantra and founded Tantra Illuminated Online as a home for these traditional teachings. I’m honored and humbled to carry on a tradition and guide such a diverse and intrepid group of spiritual practitioners on their path of awakening.
I’m the author of Tantra Illuminated: The Philosophy, History, and Practice of a Timeless Tradition, the first comprehensive and accessible introduction to Classical Tantra in English. The book is also available in Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian (and soon to be in German). My second book, The Recognition Sūtras, is a translation and commentary on a 1000-year-old masterpiece on experiential recognition of oneself as a direct expression of universal divine Consciousness.
May these teachings be a blessing for all beings.

Near Enemies of the Truth
Avoid the Pitfalls of the Spiritual Life and Become Radically Free
Near Enemies of the Truth offers itself as a guide to the pitfalls of the spiritual life. However, it doesn’t focus on the negative. In each chapter, after pointing out how a spiritual teaching can be construed in a non-beneficial way, Wallis focuses on the deeper truth and ancient wisdom underlying that teaching, which is often obscured by its popular bumper-sticker version. Each chapter contains a supportive insight for your spiritual process and/or for your everyday life, including guided meditations and reflections.

Why is community
so important?
Kula is a Sanskrit word that can be translated as community, assembly, family or a self-contained group and it refers to those who come together to practice.
In the Tantrik view, being part of a community has great significance. As the layers of our conditioned identity start to peel away, the support, friendship, and recognition of yourself in the other become a key component of our awakening process.
